DVM Clothing and Footwear Requirements
All requirements are available for trying on during the month of February/march in The Grad Store, ground floor Holme building opposite Pharmacy. Please try on before ordering if possible.
DVM students are required to purchase personal clothing for practical classes, intramural teaching hospital placements and extramural placements.
Unless otherwise specified, clothing must be School-specific (i.e. embroidered with University and School names) to identify you when attending intramural teaching hospital placements and extramural placements. These items are only available from this School on-line store (http://vetscience.sydneyestore.com.au/). All other clothing and footwear may be substituted with equivalent alternatives.
It is essential that all students have the following items by the start of Week 3 of DVM Year One, Semester One - allow enough time to place your order and have delivered before this date.
Items Only Available From this Online Store:
1. One School embroidered white dental protective coat (only available from on-line store - Product code U1:92).
2. Two (minimum) white laboratory coats (School embroidered available from on-line store - Product code U1:6100 or non-School-specific alternative from other vendors).
3. One pair School embroidered long-sleeved overalls (only available from on-line store - Product code X:WOCR).
4. At least one pair School embroidered short-sleeved overalls (only available from on-line store Product code X:WOCRS) – these are required for all large animal obstetrics, pregnancy diagnosis and rectal palpation practical classes (rolling long sleeves up is NOT acceptable for any of these classes.) The School strongly recommends having 3-4 pairs of short sleeve overalls over the course of the degree to ensure you are prepared for practical classes on consecutive days.
5. School embroidered light blue long-sleeved shirt (only available from on-line store - Product code X:S2130 for women and X:S2030 for men).
6. One (minimum) School embroidered light blue polo shirt (only available from on-line store - Product code X:922 for women and X:923 for men).
Other Required Items:
1. At least one pair of safety glasses. Please note: All students are required to wear safety glasses for all dissection classes.
2. One (minimum) pair navy blue cotton drill work trousers (available from on-line store - Product code U1:K43530 for women and U1:K13100 for men or alternative from other vendors).
Please note that these MUST be cotton drill work trousers – jeans or shorts are NOT acceptable alternatives in DVM practical classes or placements.
3. One pair black gumboots (available from this on-line store or other vendors).
4. For maximum foot protection gumboots should be certified to AS/NZS 2210.3:2010 rating with an impact resistant protective toe cap and provide metatarsal protection.
5. One pair black or brown lace up or slip on safety boots (available from on-line store or other vendors). GUMBOOTS, JOGGERS AND HIKING BOOTS ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE SUBSTITUTES. The boots must have leather uppers and the top of the boot must
extend over your ankle. Please note that for maximum foot protection safety boots should be certified to AS/NZS 2210.3:2010 rating with an impact-resistant protective toecap and provide metatarsal protection.
6. One pair surgical scrubs (top and bottom) – any colour.
7. At least one hat (wide-brimmed hat or ball-cap) and at least one raincoat/water-proof jacket (NO ponchos or umbrellas) for working outside in inclement weather.
8. Labcoat wash bags – available from USyd Stores – Jane Foss Russell and Holme Buildings- $4.95
Dress Code for Practical Classes and Placements
Students will be informed by relevant instructors of the dress code for specific classes. All clothing must be clean and tidy (no stains, rips, tears or holes). Students must wear footwear as prescribed for each class or placement to minimise workplace health and safety risks. Sandals and thongs are NEVER acceptable in practical classes, intramural teaching hospital placements or extramural placements.
The following is a summary of the dress code requirements for some classes and placements in DVM Years 1 and 2:
Animal Management Systems practicals
- School embroidered long-and short-sleeved overalls
- Gumboots
- Safety boots
(footwear depends on animal species)
Small Animal Intramural Teaching Hospital Placements (Years 1 & 2)
- • School embroidered dental protective coat over either School embroidered long-sleeved shirt or polo shirt, navy blue cotton drill work trousers and appropriate footwear
- • Surgical scrubs will be required when observing/assisting with surgical procedures
Large Animal Intramural Teaching Hospital Placements (Years 1 & 2)
- School embroidered overalls and gumboots or safety boots (footwear depending on animal species)
- Surgical scrubs will be required when observing/assisting with surgical procedures

Large Animal Practical Classes and Extramural farm Placements (Years 1 & 2)
- School embroidered overalls and gumboots or safety boots (footwear depending on animal species)

Postmortem/Necroscopy Practical Classes (Year 2)
- School embroidered long-sleeved overalls and gumboots
Equine practical classes (Years 1, 2, & 3)
- School embroidered long-sleeved blue overalls and School embroidered short-sleeved blue overalls
- Black or brown lace-up or slip-on safety/work boots (do not need to be steel-capped; gumboots are NOT an acceptable substitute)
- One School embroidered light blue long-sleeved shirt and one School embroidered light blue polo shirt
- Navy blue cotton drill work trousers (NOT jeans or shorts)
- Hat and raincoat for inclement weather
Dissection classes (Years 1, 2, & 3)
- White laboratory coat and appropriate footwear is essential
- Protective safety eyewear is essential
- Additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as sleeve protectors, latex/nitrile gloves, etc are supplied by the laboratory
NOTE: Students who do not comply with dissection class dress requirements will not be permitted into the laboratory, with no exception.
Other Practical Classes (Years 1 & 2)
- White laboratory coat with name tag and appropriate footwear (depending on practical class)
- Surgical scrubs will be required in some surgery practical classes
